In Vitro Rumen Fermentation of Alfalfa

چکیده
A L T H O U G H in vitro and in vivo rumen studies of cellulose digestion and volatile fatty acid production are numerous (Johnson, 1966), a paucity of information is available on the bioenergetics of tureen digestion. From four in vitro fermentations, in which the heat of combustion of substrate and the products was determined, Marston (1948) concluded that the heat of rumen fermentation of purified cellulose was 6% of the combustible energy of the cellulose fermented. More recently, Walker and Forrest ~(1964) incubated whole rumen contents in a novel calorimeter. They found that the rate of heat production of rumen contents 24 hr. after feeding was 1 cal per 1 % solids per 250 ml per hour. The rates of gas and heat production were found to be closely related and directly proportional to the solids contents of the medium. The purpose of this investigation was 1) to develop an in' vitro system in which the energetics of rumen fermentations could be studied and 2) to determine the energetics of alfalfa hay digestion by tureen microorganisms in vitro.

This study was conducted to evaluate the possibility of alfalfa replacement with fenugreek hay for ruminants, using in vitro gas production parameters and some of rumen fermentation characteristics. For this propose, five different total mixed rations were formulated to meet nutrient requirements of 35 kg growing lambs with gradually replacement of alfalfa in control diet (T1) with different le...
متن کاملIn vitro determination of the characteristics of fresh and frozen-thawed alfalfa and ryegrass
Current ruminant feeding systems depend on knowledge of the composition of feeds and the rate and extent of degradation of feed organic matter (OM) and crude protein (CP) in the rumen. The effect of storage and preparation of samples on in vitro gas production and fermentation characteristics of two common forage species, namely alfalfa and ryegrass werestudied. Samples were prepared as fresh (...
متن کاملEffects of Fat Supplementation and Chop Length on Milk Composition and Ruminal Fermentation of Cows Fed Diets Containing Alfalfa Silage
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of fat supplementation for enhancing milk conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in early lactation without affecting ruminal fermentation. 24 Holstein dairy cows were assigned to a completely randomized design employing a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement. Factors were particle size (15 and 25 mm) and two different sources of alfalfa supplemented with and wit...

In this experiment, different doses of Zataria multiflora (ZM) and Eucalyptus globolus (EG) essential oils (EOs) (0, 100, 250, 500, 750 and 1000 µg/mL) and a mixture of them were added to alfalfa hay incubated with buffered rumen liquor of Merghoz goat to assess in vitro gas production, rumen fermentation and protozoa population. In all treatments the asymptotic gas volume (B) and the rate cons...
